Care With Values: Why Ethics Must Sit at the Heart of Every Decision

Working with children and young people brings a profound responsibility. Every decision has the potential to affect someone's safety, confidence, relationships and future.
That is why values and ethics cannot simply sit inside a policy document.
They need to be visible in everyday practice.
Doing the right thing, even when it is difficult
Ethical care means asking difficult questions. Is this decision genuinely in the young person's best interests? Have we listened to their views? Are we protecting their rights? Are we treating them with dignity? Could we do something differently?
Sometimes the right decision is not the easiest decision. That is where strong professional values matter.
Children first
At 3S Adolescent Care, children and young people are at the heart of our organisation. That means seeing the individual, not simply their behaviour or circumstances.
A young person may have experienced trauma, instability, disrupted education or difficult relationships. Those experiences may influence how they respond to adults and the world around them. Our responsibility is not to define them by their past. It is to understand it and help them move forward.

Values become meaningful through behaviour
Values are only meaningful when they influence what people actually do.
Respect means listening. Compassion means remaining patient when things are difficult. Integrity means being honest. Accountability means taking responsibility when something goes wrong. Curiosity means asking why rather than making assumptions. And care means treating every young person as an individual whose story matters.
Professionalism and humanity belong together
Residential care requires strong professional standards. Safeguarding.
Risk management. Governance. Record keeping. Training. Regulation. Accountability.
But professionalism should never come at the expense of humanity.
The best care brings both together.
Ofsted's current framework reflects this balance, considering not only whether homes meet regulatory requirements but also the quality of relationships, children's day-to-day experiences, their wellbeing, participation and preparation for the future.
Looking ahead
As 3S Adolescent Care continues to grow, our values become even more important. Four homes in under four years is an important milestone. But growth brings responsibility.
We need to ensure that the culture that defines 3S remains strong as new homes open, new colleagues join and more children and young people come through our doors.
Our ambition is not simply to become bigger. It is to become better. Better at listening. Better at understanding. Better at supporting. Better at measuring impact. Better at learning.
And better at helping young people build futures that reflect their own potential.
Because ultimately, values are not what we say about ourselves. They are what a young person experiences when they need us most.
